Uniform and Equipage
The Regiment wore dark blue tailed coats of period
design with (same shade) blue facings, with no lapels. The uniform was decorated with white metal
buttons with a script “I” design and a "10" upon them. Lace is only upon the standing collar
(earlier uniforms might have had white piping around the buttonholes). They wore a "tombstone" shako,
decorated with an octagonal tin plate on front. These were worn over a white linen ruffled shirt, white duck
trousers, black canvas gaiters, leather tie shoes, and a leather neck
stock. The soldiers carried a US
Springfield 1795 or 1803 musket (similar to Charleville of Rev War use). The cartridge box and bayonet carriage were
made of blackened leather with a pewter plate at the overlap. Also carried were a haversack, Lherbett (sp)
backpack, and canteen, all painted light blue and marked "US". For fatigue duty, the soldiers wore a white
fabric jacket and a blue wool cap. The
early war uniform was a bit ornate, but there were distribution problems, as
there was a shortage of wool and tape lace.
The earlier coats were blue (or possibly brown) with crimson collar and
cuffs, and strips of lace on the chest at each button. A shorter fabric shako was worn, similar to
the French style, with a tall front-piece.
